The Backstory The feel of this image is undeniable. We see the back of the coke sign hanging in the window, and its image reflected perfectly in the mirror above the soda fountain. The unknown photographer accidentally created a work of art. In early 20th-century pharmacies, soda fountains became social hubs where Coca-Cola was served alongside medicines, helping popularize Coke as an affordable American treat and gathering place nationwide.

Artist’s Commentary I acquired this image in a large collection from an estate. I absolutely loved the subject matter, but the image only carried one note “Gillan’s.” Nothing else in the collection suggested a location. The reflection in the mirror that said “prescriptions” made me relatively sure this was a pharmacy. Unfortunately, I was not able to pinpoint the definitive location.
