A Young Man's Journeys
The Backstory
Thomas H. Feltz was born in 1893, and in 1913 at the age of twenty took a trip aboard the sternwheeler “Queen City” from Cincinnati to New Orleans. His goal was to see New Orleans and experience Mardi Gras. He captured his journey in a series of remarkable photos. This is one of them.
A few years later, he found himself on the battlefields of WWI.
What happened next will shock you.

Artist’s Commentary:
When I acquired this image, I thought it would lead me to a charming story of riverboat travel in the early 1900s. Yes, it had that element, but when I followed this tale, it took me to the story of a young man who fought for freedom thousands of miles from home.
This is a story, and an image, that you can literally step into and be transported to a different time.
The grittiness and imperfections in this image add to its mood and tone.
