Kintaikyo Bridge 1948

Kintaikyo Bridge 1948

Washed Away After 276 Years

The Backstory
In 1948 a U.S. Soldier serving as part of the occupying forces in Japan after WWII took this beautiful picture of the Kintaikyo Bridge. His timing was remarkable. The story of the bridge goes back hundreds of years, but the story was about to end.

Artist’s Commentary
I discovered this photo in a storage unit in Western Pennsylvania. The images in the collection carried no names or notes, only the year, 1948. That clue was enough to identify the bridge and find the story.
